Dancing
I met with some of my papas’ side of the family today, I’m not usually one to go out with a bunch of people I don’t know well, but I’ve been trying to be less of a shut in recently. I already had met his son and his wife, so I talked to them for most of the time. It was very pleasant and reminded me that I need to invite more people out. Maybe ill try that one friend I made a few months ago…
There was live music playing – lots of bluegrass covers of jazz and rock songs. I think they were playing a cover of infirmary blues when I offhandedly commented that I wished that people were dancing. Then papa got up and invited me to dance with him by our table, I was so happy to I cant even put it into words. Maybe I should go to swing clubs… anyways, we got a little applause from the table next to us, which was cute, lol.
Tomorrow I’ll meet up with them again on my way up to spend Christmas with my family. I hope I have just as good a time. This reminds me that I need to freeze the chicken in my fridge before I go.
CONcerning CON CONduct
I sometimes think that my professors are really stupid. Which I know is a weird thing to say because at least some of them have a PhD – and all of them have at least a master’s in nursing. But some of these guys – you would think that they had never covered the material before. Or even read the textbook pages that they assign for us.
I’m listening to recordings of the PowerPoint lectures as a way to review and work on my crochet projects at the same time and I have been noticing that on most of the lectures for the beginning of my OB/L&D class, the lectures are just the teachers stumbling through the PowerPoint, reading off the slides, not pronouncing words correctly, etc. It also just so happens that these are the most difficult concepts for me to grasp… *sigh*
I guess they’re not stupid, they’re just out of their league? Or trying to teach outside of what they know? Because in that same class the second half of the year we went over specifics of delivery, complications, and the first year of life – which is way more hands of then the stuff we learned in the first half of the semester. And the professors would talk about how they are like certified lactation consultants, or how they worked in L&D for 15 years or whatever else. And you could tell that they knew about this stuff way more because they WOULDN’T read off the slides!
Is it too unreasonable to ask that the CON actually hires people who know what they’re talking about? Or like make sure they know what they’re teaching? I know they use the same slides from year to year while cycling out teachers… there has to be a better way. So frustrated.
LAND HO!
There's nothing unexpected about finals week being stressful – so I will not shout about the week I have in store. I will say that combined with the project and two full days of work, I will have to limit myself to a few pleasures besides eating and sleeping. I wanted to use this post to sort of plan out my week – and get my thoughts in line before committing to the struggle.
Tomorrow: I will be heading back home and will prepare my room for hours at my desk. I’ll do my laundry and get some groceries for the week. I’ll also finish my part of the group project. If I have time leftover (yes I will) I will start studying module two for FF and module three for A+C. Monday I will be busy all day with clinicals.
Tuesday: this day will be reserved for the study of module three for FF and two for A+C. then I will message my group to schedule how we will work of the rest of the presentation. I probably should make a large dinner today. Wednesday I will be busy with work.
The rest of the week: dedicated to the remaining modules, turning in my hours log, and finishing the project. It does not matter what it takes. It will be done.
listeners choice
For my local classical music radio station, there was a segment where the listeners could submit their top three classical works, and on Thanksgiving Day, they would play the top 100 most popular. This ended up taking both Thanksgiving Day and the day after because they decided to play the entire symphony and opera for EVERY single one.
My family has quite a few musicians – and came together and wrote our predictions for the top songs of the night. We also bet on the composer of the #1 most popular piece for our area. I made bingo cards the second night and we made a whole game out of it.
We were not even close. I think out of the 40 or so songs that we proposed were to be in the top twenty, we got about 10 correct (which is good considering how many songs were played, but I digress) and NO bingos. I think my father and sibling having backgrounds in classical music warped our perception on which pieces the public would pick. There was an assumption among us that the voters in this compilation were going to be more learned in the arts, I think. My sibling was sure that the number one song was going to be some piece that I could come up with the tune of. It was Dvorak 9.
I emailed the radio station to thank them and encourage them to do it again next year. I don’t usually do things like that, but I really enjoyed it and wanted them to do it again. I also wanted them to update their website with the list from this year because their website is about 2 years out of date in their playlists. I’m sure it’s just one overwhelmed guy who works for the college – and is more focused on other things, but maybe they’ll be convinced to update it with my incredibly nice email.
